Academic Conferences and Seminars

 

International Symposium on Sustainable Community Development

HKCT has organized the International Symposium on Sustainable Community Development in 2007, offering an interactive sharing and exchange platform for academic sectors, professional bodies and the public to discuss the impact of sustainable development on the community and enhance public understanding and awareness on Sustainable Community Development. Organized in the Lecture Hall of Duke of Windsor Social Service Building on 06, November, 2007, the Symposium has attracted the participation of the renowned scholars from Hong Kong, China and overseas countries and different professional bodies. Apart from the participation of scholars, the representatives from St.James’ Settlement, Hong Kong’s Federation of Women’s Centre, Industrial Relations Institute, The Society of Operations Engineers (Hong Kong Region), Association of Engineering Professionals in Society Ltd, Business Environment Council, Centre for Construction Innovation in Britain and other professional bodies also attend the Symposium. Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, GBS, JP, Secretary for Development, Hon Leung Chun Ying, GBM, GBS, JP, member of the Management Board of HKCT and Ms Lau Pui King, Priscilla, JP, Hong Kong delegate of the National People's Congress and member of the Management Board of HKCT were also invited to be the Officiating guests of the Symposium.

 

International Conference on Urban Sustainability 2008

After the International Symposium on Sustainable Community Development, HKCT has subsequently organized the International Conference on Urban Sustainability in 2008.With the collaboration between HKCT and the Faculty of Architecture of The University of Hong Kong, the Symposium was held on 14 January 2008 at Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre. The theme of the Symposium was Urban Development. The conference provided opportunities for Hong Kong and international professionals to showcase their practical experience and research findings on urban sustainability for an exchange with an international audience. Dr Louis NG Chi-wa, Assistant Director (Heritage and Museums) of Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Prof Hon Patrick LAU Sau-shing, SBS, JP, Legislative Council member and Dr CHAN Cheuk Hay, the President and Principal of HKCT were invited to be the Officiating guest of the Symposium. Overseas experts and renowned scholars from Britain, Spain, Japan and other countries were also invited to be the guest speakers.

 

Conference on Employment for People with Disabilities in China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan

HKCT held the “Conference on Employment for People with Disabilities in China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan”. Jointly sponsored by the Kwun Tong District Council, the Kwun Tong District Office, and The International Day of Disabled Persons Working Group for Kwun Tong and the Hong Kong Federation of Handicapped Youth, the conference invited Academics and representatives of rehabilitation organizations in China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan to present and discuss reports on employment of disabled people in their region. Discussion topic included the employment of disabled people, job training, support services and local social enterprises etc. The conference has invited some NGOs from China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan including Guangzhou Disabled Persons’ Federation, Parents’ Association for Persons with Intellectual Disability, R.O.C, Children ARE US Foundation, Department of Cooperative Economics, Feng Chia University, Caritas Macau, Macau Deaf Association, Macau Special Olympics, The Hong Kong Joint Council for People with Disabilities, The Mental Health Association of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Rehabilitation Power, TWGHs Jockey Club Rehabilitation Complex, The Department of Applied Social Sciences, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong Blind Union, Amity Mutual Support Society etc.

 

Housing Policy Seminar Series

In response to the growing concern of housing problem from the society, HKCT Institute of Social Science (ISS) has organized “Housing Policy Seminar Series”(「房屋政策前瞻」講座系列 ). In the three series of seminars, professions in property industry, researchers of housing policies and renowned academics were invited to analyze the root of housing problem from different perspectives and to provide concrete recommendation for the government and politicians. In the first seminar, Mr. Wong Kwun, Chairman of the Federation of Public Housing Estates and Dr. Lee Kin-ching, James, Head of the Department of Applied Social Sciences of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University has discussed the housing policies under the theme of “The Transformation of Hong Kong Housing Policies.” In the second seminar, Dr. Chang Ping Hung, Wallace from Department of Architecture of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Dr. Chan Man Hung, Director of the Public Policy Research Institute and Head of China Business Centre of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University have also discussed the housing problems under the theme of “The theoretical analysis of Housing Problem”

The Institute has especially held the last seminar in HKCT Jockey Club Ma On Shan Campus. In the seminar, it has invited Mr. Tang Ying Yen, and Mr. Leung Chun Ying, two renowned politician in Hong Kong, to be the guest speakers. Miss Chan Yuen Han, Vice Chairwoman of Hong Kong Federation of Trade Union and Dr. Chan Cheuk Hei, Director of HKCT Institute of Social Science have been the commentator and seminar host respectively. Since it was the first time for both political figures to discuss social issues and express their comments, it attracted huge media coverage. Cable TV, ATV, TVB and RTHK had also broadcast the seminars. Public can also watch the program even they could not attend the seminar.
